![]() He had a degree of independence and free will, but in truth he served only as Palpatine's proxy and public face. Weaker after his death and resurrection, potentially vulnerable if his enemies discovered he was alive, Palpatine used Snoke as a public figure. There are interesting parallels between Darth Plagueis' use of Palpatine and Palpatine's use of Snoke decades later. By this interpretation, Darth Sidious was simply Darth Plagueis' chosen tool to fulfil his goals, just as Darth Vader was Palpatine's. Although Palpatine would never acknowledge it, the image's structure suggests Darth Plagueis is the origin of the whole story, the one truly responsible for the ascendance of the Sith. This shows the various generations of the Skywalker saga: Rey and Kylo Ren are overshadowed by the legacy of Darth Vader, the one who was chosen by the Emperor, but behind Palpatine is the shadowed form of Darth Plagueis. The extent to which this is the case is subtly suggested in Secrets of the Sith, in the first Star Wars canon image of Darth Plagueis. This means there's a sense in which, for all his genius, Palpatine was simply the beneficiary of a thousand years' worth of Sith schemes. The most important hint was offered in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith itself, however, when the Sith Lord spoke of his own master. Palpatine's canon backstory is still something of a mystery, with Lucasfilm only gradually revealing the canon version in subtle hints. A supreme egotist, he even reinterpreted the Jedi prophecy of the Chosen One to make it all about him. ![]() Darth Sidious believed himself the culmination of everything the Sith had ever worked for, the embodiment of all their ancient prophecies.
